Art Nouveau Kayserzinn Silver Pewter Mirror
A finely cast petite wall mirror by Kayserzinn c.1900, a wonderful example of the Art Nouveau or rather Jugenstil style. In polished pewter by J.P Kayser & Sohn of Krefeld, Germany and stamped '611' indicating manufacture between 1894-1912.
The superior pewter produced by Kayser was made with a lead free alloy of tin and silver that gave their material a 'luminous gleam' ensuring their finer pieces are still very desirable. Developed under designers such as Hugo Leven, 'symbolistic and floral motifs were "processed" into functional objects with slender elegant contours'. Very much present in this piece, with ornamented plant open-work, curved volute tendrils and a softly contoured surface.
The bevelled mirror plate could well be a later addition as our research has only found other examples of this piece as a picture frame, but if it is a later conversion it has been expertly done with the easel support removed and sympathetic hanger delicately added to the varnished oak backed reverse.
Measures approx. 25cm long by 19cm wide
