A great pair of mid-century carved wood diptych mirrors, glamorous and nicely proportioned. Now with a more recent and period appropriate lightly textured plaster finish. Carved cascades of curves and swirls frame the original mirror, which has light foxing in places but still largely clear.
Once likely gilt gesso, but overpainted since in a vivid red which is still present on the reverse, with evidence of a more recent gold leaf covering. Now with a cleaner finish and each heavy panel restrung with off-white braided cord. Would look equally well as a leaning pair as hung.
Continental, c.1950
Approx. dimensions: H 55cm x W 29cm x D 4cm
